I fell in love with Marrakech. Secretive, meandering Souk streets sparkling with light and steeped in shade. The hustle and bustle of daily life, the delicious smells of food cooking on the market stalls, the doorways, archways, alleyways. Intricate architecture, Arabic script, French conversations. Moroccan history through the eyes of photographers and stunning, strong Berber portraits at the Maison de la Photographie. Roof terraces and the most beautiful sunsets.

I was thrilled to visit Kenya to run participatory photography workshops for PhotoVoice and The Overseas Development Institute (ODI). We were based in a tiny and very remote village. Every day the young people from all around walked miles to come and join us for the workshops. They were a joy to be with and LOVED learning about cameras (they'd never used one before).
Later I had chance to explore more of Kenya. These photos are the places I saw and some of the people I met en route. Oh, and there's animals, LOTS of animals.....

You'd probably associate The Canaries with sunshine. It was overcast and moody when I visited. I didn't mind one bit it was so beautiful with mountains shrouded in mist and the bleak oranges of land shaped by volcanoes.

The water was mirror-still that day and despite the tourists that descended on mass for the beach and for quayside oysters, there was a calm on the docks.

Magical, romantic Venice is timeless and beautiful, with its crumbling brickwork, fading paint, and blue waters gently ebbing and flowing by. In the warren of streets away from the tourist spots you find churches full of old masters, tiny humpbacked-bridges and shafts of light and shadow that make the waterways glitter.
Wander the streets, get lost, watch the world go by - Aperol Spritz in hand, visit the bookshop, and if you get time take a trip out on the lagoon to visit the islands, the city's cemetery, see the colourful houses of Burano, and to view Venice from afar.

What most struck me about this part of Ireland was how very, very beautiful it was. The changes in weather, which happen so abruptly, transform the coastline from prettiness to brooding majesty. In Sligo great peaks loom on the horizon and the ocean is so powerful, smashing and grinding against the shores. It really is a special place.
And Giant's Causeway, as you'll know, is unique, with its mighty columns of stone festooned with humans.

From the concrete to the beach, I LOVE Margate. I love the steps sweeping down in to the sea - the most idyllic place to lounge and dip your feet on sunny summer days. I love walking barefoot on the wet sand with the sound of waves in my ears and the sea breeze on my face. I love how the Turner Contemporary gleams so white in the sunlight - there's always something interesting going on there. And, of course, exploring the harbour and old town, full of artists and curiosities.

Early evening boats drawing in with their catch, gulls noisily twisting and turning overhead, the cliffs of Portland bathed orange in evening light, and the lighthouse getting ready for duty.
